Natura 2000

Nature 2000 is a network of nature protected areas, declared in all countries of the European Union with the purpose of nature protection. In order to implement the aims of the Birds Directive and Habitats Directive, Natura 2000 ecological network was set up. Sites are defined by each member country. Each country had to select areas for the protection of important EU species and habitats. In Natura 2000 site Goričko we are protecting 14 species of birds, one plant species, 24 species of animals, and 7 types of habitats. In Slovenia, the Natura 2000 sites have been declared in 2004, when Slovenia joined the EU.
