The positive effects of meadows restoration are already visible

Since 2017, we have been implementing the Gorička krajina project. The main aim of the project is the restoration of a 108 ha of abandoned meadows within Natura 2000 Goričko area. Before the first mowing in 2020, we carried out a rough analysis of the mowing effects so far. Based on the photos, we compared the appearance and condition of meadows before first restoration in 2018 or earlier and in May 2020. Some of meadows restoration had began already in the Gorički travniki project in 2015 or 2016. The final analysis will be carried out at the end of the project in 2021, when the meadows will be reviewed by botanists. After looking at the meadows and comparing the photos, we are already noticing the positive effects of mowing on biodiversity, as more and more flowering plants appear in the meadows. Among them are also protected species such as the green-winged orchid. Meanwhile the abundance of the Giant goldenrod is decreasing.
