Birds

Goričko is home to 120 species of birds. Among them are some rare and endangered worldwide. In year 2014 after ten years the breeding of the European roller (Coracias garrulus) was confirmed. From the 70s species became to decline rapidly as a result of intensification of farming. A lot of other bird species are now facing similar destiny.
A few years ago, a European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) returned to Goričko. Few pairs of little owl (Athene noctua) still nest in old houses. Rare is the corn bunting (Emberiza calandra). The extensive land abandonemt with consequent overgrowth caused the population increase of whitethroat (Sylvia communis), marsh warbler (Acrocephalus palustris), barred warbler (Sylvia nisoria) and lesser whitethroat (Sylvia curruca). The redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) nests in orchards in the western part. Among the interesting but rare breeding birds is also the nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus).
