Queens of the wet meadows

Marsh gentian (Gentiana pneumonanthe)
Plant from the gentians family (Gentianaceae) thrives on wet meadows. It grows to the height of 50 cm and has flowers concentrated on top of the stem. The leaves are arranged along the stem and are single-pointed and spiny. The dark blue, five-digit flowers can be admired between July and September. Unfortunatelly as a result of the intensification of the wet meadows and drainage systems habitats of the marsh gentian are vanishing at almost alarming rate. In Goričko marsh gentian is qiute common on late mown wet meadows with Molinia spp.

Buttefly Alcon blue (Phengaris alcon) lays its eggs on Gentians flowers as  their caterpillars feed on them. Similarly to the scarce large blue caterpillars alcon blues also get ‘adopted’ by ants.

Yellow daylily (Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus)
Flowers of the yellow daylily might be very reminiscent of the lilies, but it belongs to a different family – Asphodelaceae. Individual yellow flowers are open for only one day, which is why they are also named yellow day-lilies. Unlike lilies, which have a leafy stem, the daylilies have a bare stem and numerous ground leaves. The plant measures 80 to 100 cm in height. On the top of the stem up to 12 fragrant yellow flowers bloom in late May and through June. It grows on wet and moist meadows. Although widespread through entire Slovenia, it is rare everywhere, but can be found with some of the highest densities in the eastern part of the Goričko Nature Park.
