First hunting poles installed for the scops owl

On Tuesday, May 8, we started with the installation of the hunting poles within the Gorička krajina project. The first poles were installed in the western part of the Goričko. The main aim of the poles installation is to improve foraging conditions for the scops owl. The installation of poles is necessary where landscape lack natural  structures such as individual trees or hedges. Their tops are used by scops owl as a lookout for prey. With the land owners permissions we installed about 3 m high and 20 cm thick black locust poles. About half a meter goes into the ground, the upper part will be used by birds to catch insects.

On Friday, June 1, 2018, we continued with the installation of poles in the eastern part of Goričko. Markovci has one of the highest density of scops owl in eastern part. In areas where there is a lack of natural structures, we installed 64 poles. During the project, we will install another 315 poles within Natura 2000 site Goričko.

As part of the Gorička krajina project, we will in the future conclude conservation agreements with landowners to further improve habitat conditions for scops owl. Interested landowners who would like to help scops owl and other birds can get more information at 02-551-88-71 between Monday and Friday between 8 am and 2 pm.
