Nursery roost of the lesser horseshoe bat saved

Attic of the former school in Kančevci in one of the two known nursery roosts of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) within the Natura 2000 site Goričko. Inventory of the roost was carried out between the second half of April to the beginning of October 2018 with the aim to recognize important hanging paces of bats and to record microclimatic conditions (humidity and temperature) to detail. The number of the bats with an aim to assess the reproductive success was carefully monitored. In April 2018, the Kančevci Parish renovated the dilapidated roof of the former school. The leaking roof pose a great threat to the roost and within the Gorička krajina project we found a long-term solution for bats and the building itself.

The experts of the Centre for Cartography of Fauna and Flora (CKFF) carried out the inventory and the monitoring of bats and in the final report, they provided some additional conservation measures to further improve the conditions for bats. The representatives of the Kančevci Parish had been already informed about the proposed measures.
In the last year of the project, in 2021, the same methodology will be used for the final assessment of the reproductive success of the lesser horseshoe bat and the effectiveness of the implemented measures.
